History and architecture

The original purpose of the new building was to protect against floods , which are often very dramatic in Steyr, as was the case in 1572. The German school was housed in it for two centuries and the gendarmerie barracks in the 19th century . Since 1969 it has housed parts of the collection of the Steyr City Museum (the majority is in the neighboring Innerberger Stadel ). The south side received a second arch in 1973 for traffic reasons. As a replacement for the old iron Neutor Bridge over the Enns , the Schönauer Bridge was completed in the same year as part of the Hundsgraben bypass . The Neutorbrücke was initially retained as a pedestrian crossing and was blown up in June 1974; the work was completed in October of the same year. The river-side frescoes of the gate were restored and instead of the bridge a viewing balcony was built.

The city wall, which was demolished from 1829 onwards (→ Steyr - razing of the medieval fortifications ) is partially preserved in this section. A piece connects the western side of the gate with a fortified tower below the city parsonage.
