The Kollertor

The Kollertor (Kollergasse 16) is a city gate in the Ennsdorf district in the municipality of Steyr in Upper Austria . It stands directly on the Enns River and loopholes on the upper floor indicate the former military function. The building is a listed building .

history

The two-storey gatehouse dates from 1480 and is one of three surviving city gates , along with the Neutor at Grünmarkt and the Schnallentor at Gleinkergasse. The Schmiedtor at Haratzmüllerstraße was demolished in 1855, the Ennstor at Zwischenbrücken in 1864, the Ortltor in Schlüsselhofgasse disappeared in 1891, and the Johannestor fell victim to bomb damage in 1944.

In 1969 the loopholes were uncovered, the sgraffitized corner blocks were renewed, stone cleaning was carried out and the roof was repaired with plain tiles . In 2005 a renewed repair followed, whereby emphasis was also placed on the original appearance.

Surname

The name Kollertor comes from the fact that the charcoal required by the blacksmiths , which was made by the charcoal burners , was transported through this gate by the carters. The word Köhler comes from the Middle High German koler or köler , which means "coal burner".
