Gullmarsplan is an above-ground station of the Stockholm subway " Tunnelbana ". It is located in the Södermalm district . The station is served by the Gröna linjen of the Stockholm subway system as well as by the light rail-like Tvärbanan , which stops at the western entrance of the station. There is a large bus terminal above the station. The central location makes the station the busiest station in the underground network in the southern part of Stockholm. On a normal winter working day, 38,500 commuters get on the subway here, as well as 10,300 on the Tvärnana and 30,700 on buses.

The station was put into operation on September 3, 1946 under the name Johanneshov as a tram stop. The metro started operating on October 1, 1950 when the first Stockholm metro section Slussen –Hökarängen was inaugurated. The station did not get its current name until 1958. It is located between the stations Globen (T19) or Skärmarbrink (T17 + T18) and Skanstull . It is around four kilometers to Stockholm Central Station .

On August 20, 1990, a bus station was opened above the tracks of the subway, south of the station building, where buses to Tyresö stop , among other things . In 2000, the Gullmarsplan station of the Tvarbana towards Liljeholmen was opened right next to the tracks of the Tunnelbana , and in 2002 also to Sickle Udde. This makes Gullmarsplan one of the more powerful transfer points in Stockholm's local transport. This became even more pronounced when the Tvarbana was extended to Sickla in autumn 2017.

Vertical construction

The station is located on a slope, the Skansbacken, which slopes down to the north and east. The natural topography was supplemented by engineering structures and three levels were created:

  • The lower level consists of the underground and Tvärnana platforms and the upper ends of the Skanstullsbrücke and Johanneshovsbrücke.
  • The middle level forms the actual Gullmarsplan town square with two roundabouts. There is also the main entrance to the station with a few shops. The main bus line 4 in the direction of Radiohuset and some other local buses stop at this level on the northern side of the station building.
  • The bus station for the 800 buses (mainly to Tyresö) forms the upper level.

The middle level is about 43 m above sea level, the other levels about 4 m below or above.

future

It has been decided to extend the blue line from Kungsträdgården to Södermalm and then in two branches to Nacka and Gullmarsplan. The second branch should then take over the route to Hagsätra from the Sockenplan stop. Gullmarsplan will then get a new platform in a lower position for the blue line, which increases the importance of the station again.

The tracks of the blue line will be about 32 m below sea level. The height difference to the previous station would be too high for normal escalators. Therefore only elevators will be built there. The new station will have a second exit near the Tvärnana station in Mårtensdal. Because this is only about 9 m above sea level, escalators are provided here.
