Millesgården is an art museum and sculpture park in the municipality of Lidingö near Stockholm and was the home and studio of the Swedish artist couple Olga and Carl Milles until 1931 .

history

In 1906 Carl and Olga Milles bought a plot of land on the Herserudsklippan on Lidingö and had their home and art studio built according to the plans of the architect Karl M. Bengtsson . The inauguration took place in 1908. Carl Milles' half-brother, Evert Milles, was responsible for the planning and implementation of later renovations and extensions . Between 1920 and 1931, the property was enlarged through acquisitions. a. The “Small Atelier” Lilla Ateljén was added. In 1931 the Milles couple moved to the USA . In 1936 Millesgården was converted into a foundation and given to the Swedish people as a gift.

The large sculpture park was created in connection with Milles' return from the USA in 1950. Here he placed monumental replicas of free-standing sculptures from the USA and Sweden. When Carl Milles died on September 19, 1955, he got his final resting place in the small forest chapel skogskapellet , which is also located on the premises. The chapel resembles path chapels that can be found in southern Germany and Austria. Olga Milles, who was born in Austria, was also buried here next to her husband after her death in 1967.

Changing exhibitions of Swedish and international artists can be seen in the art gallery. The entrance to Millesgården and a small museum shop are also located here.
