Stureparken is both a park and a street in Stockholm 's Östermalm district . The park measures around 100 by 50 meters and is located on the corner of Östermalmsgatan and Sturegatan . The street of the same name runs on the long side of the park parallel to Sturegatan from Östermalmsgatan to Valhallavägen .

Between 1670 and 1866 part of the park area was used as a cemetery . Initially, the cemetery was intended for seamen from the nearby naval port on Skeppsholmen . With the relocation of the port to Karlskrona in the early 1680s, the cemetery was opened to the general public. In the plague year 1710 and in years with many cholera deaths , mass graves were dug here. However, the existing earth was usually insufficient to cover the corpses, so that additional earth had to be brought in. The last burial took place in 1834 and there were still some gravestones in the cemetery in 1880. Towards the end of the 19th century, the parish of the Hedwig Eleonora Church wanted to build a chapel or elementary school on the property. However, as there were uncertainties regarding the ownership structure, a dispute arose, after which the present park was laid out in 1906.
