Högalid Church

The Högalidskirche ( Swedish Högalidskyrkan ) is a church building in Stockholm in Sweden . The parish belongs to the Stockholm diocese of the Church of Sweden .

The church is located at Högalids Kyrkväg 11 in the west of the Södermalm district , at the highest point in Högalidspark .

Architecture and history

The large brick church was built in 1916–1923 according to plans by the architect Ivar Tengbom in the style of national romanticism, at the same time as Stockholm's stadshus on the other side of the Riddarfjärden bay . The two octagonal church towers on the east side, which surround the choir, are striking . A parish hall , a rectory and a columbarium added in 1939 complete the ensemble.

The equipment is also based on Tengbom. Leading Swedish artists of the construction period were involved in the design of the Högalid Church. In the church is the largest cross in Scandinavia, created by Gunnar Torhamn . Torhamn also created the decorations on the organ and pulpit and the frescoes on the baptistery. Erik Jerke designed the altarpiece in the Byzantine style. Older pieces of equipment are the font from the 16th century and a seven-armed altar candlestick from the 18th century.

A cemetery chapel belongs to the complex, for which Einar Forseth created an apse mosaic.
