Glennon Patrick Flavin
Glennon Patrick Flavin (born March 2, 1916 in St. Louis , Missouri , † August 27, 1995 in Denton , Nebraska ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Flavin was the diocesan bishop of the Lincoln Diocese .
Life
Glennon Flavin was born in St. Louis, the youngest of six siblings to a police officer. His brother Cornelius later also became a priest. After schooling at the St. Louis University High School , one of the Jesuit -run school for boys, graduated Flavin the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary , a seminary in Shrewsbury ( Missouri ).
John J. Glennon , the Archbishop of St. Louis, dedicated Flavin on 20 December 1941 a priest. Flavin began his pastoral work as a curate at St. Michael Church . He also taught algebra at the Cathedral Latin School , also located in St. Louis. In 1949 he became curate at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis and private secretary to the new Archbishop Joseph Elmer Ritter .
Pope Pius XII appointed Flavin on April 17, 1957 Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis and Titular Bishop of Ioannina . On May 30th of the same year he was ordained bishop , which Archbishop Ritter and his co-consecrators, Bishops Charles Herman Helmsing and Leo Christopher Byrne , donated to him. In addition to his episcopal duties, Flavin also served as a chaplain at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in University City, Missouri.
After James Vincent Casey was elected Archbishop of Denver in February 1967 , Flavin was elected by Pope Paul VI on May 29 of the same year . named seventh Bishop of Lincoln, Nebraska. On the one hand, Flavin was considered a bishop, under whose leadership the number of priestly ordinations rose significantly, but he represented very conservative views. In 1981 he forbade women from serving as lecturers at church services . In addition, the Sisters of Christ the King School was founded in 1976 under Flavin's leadership .
After almost 25 years at the helm of Lincoln, Flavin resigned on March 24, 1992, following approval by Pope John Paul II .
He died three years later, in August 1995, of cancer . He was 79 years old.
