The Bellmanhaus ( Swedish : Bellmanhuset or Bellmanshuset ) is a listed building in Stockholm 's Södermalm district . It was at times the home of the Swedish poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman .

The building is located in the northern part of Södermalm, east of Götgatan at Urvädersgränd 3. The Bellman House regularly hosts exhibitions and guided tours of Bellman. There is a herb garden to the east of the house.

History and architecture

The house was built by farrier Adam Wollman after a major fire in 1723. Sven Simberg bought it in 1763. The two-storey, solidly built, plastered building was given its current appearance in the course of renovations in 1764. The renovations were completed in autumn 1764. After Simberg's death in 1768, the assessor Nils Zellén bought the building. He rented it to the well-known poet Carl Michael Bellman from 1770 to 1774. It spent one of its most productive periods of life here.

After Zellén's death several changes of ownership followed until it was acquired by the captain's widow Carolina Wennerqvist in 1850. It remained in the possession of the Wennerqvist family until 1938. In the early 1930s, Bellman researchers identified the building as Bellman's former home. Thanks in particular to the commitment of the Bellman researcher Olof Byström , it was possible to prevent the building from being demolished and to purchase it on May 15, 1938 for 37,000 crowns.

From 1938 to 1941 the building was restored on the initiative of the owner E. Lundberg. Attempts have been made to restore the building to its original state from the 18th century. Apartments in the attic have been removed, and the windows have been restored to their former size. Twenty layers of wallpaper have been removed from Bellman's room. The room was again furnished with furniture from Bellman's time. Old brick floors that were hidden under newer wooden floors were exposed. The facade was also given its original appearance.

In 1969 the house was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne .
