Stockholm City Museum
The Stockholm City Museum ( Stockholms stadsmuseum ) documents the history of the Swedish capital from different angles. The city museum was founded in 1937 and is housed in the former Södra stadshuset near Slussen on the island of Södermalm . The building, which was built in several stages between 1664 and 1680 according to plans by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder , has been under monument protection as Byggnadsminne since 1998 .
The Stockholm City Museum conducts archaeological and architectural studies and is an expert on questions of urban planning. The museum shows various aspects of the city's development in its exhibitions. It also houses an archive of over a million photographs of Stockholm (negatives) that are open to the public. The Stockholm Medieval Museum is also part of the museum.
After extensive renovation work, the museum reopened at the end of April 2019.
