position

In his writing, Herms refers explicitly to the writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau , who lived from 1845 to 1847 in a self-chosen solitude in a log cabin. During this time Thoreau's work Walden was created; or, Life in the Woods . This work and Thoreau's pamphlet On the Duty to Disobey the State made a lasting impression on Herms in his actions and writing. Herms defines his position in this way:
For me, being a writer is the most precise way of life, no matter how 'successful' I am with it. That sounds romantic, but it is the result of keen self-examination as a fellow citizen of an exuberant economic society in which I try to assert my place as someone who thinks differently and feels differently.
