The German Cichlid Society (DCG) is an association that has set itself the goal of bringing together people interested in the care, reproduction, breeding and scientific research of the cichlids . The association wants to complete and disseminate the aquarium hobby and scientific knowledge about the family of the cichlids. The association was founded on February 7, 1970 on the initiative of Klaus Grom, Werner Rexroth and Jochen Paulo. The association is based in Frankfurt am Main . He is a member of the Association of German Associations for Aquarium and Terrarium Studies (VDA) . and in the Federal Association for Professional Nature and Species Protection (BNA) e. V.

The society maintains several working groups (currently working groups for discus , large cichlids, cichlids from East Africa, dwarf cichlids in the VDA and cichlids from West and Central Africa) and regions that are determined by the Executive Committee according to geographical criteria. The association had 3,200 members in 2003 and 2,500 in 2008. The number of members decreased to 1,531 by 2016.

The society holds a regular general meeting every year and publishes the monthly association magazine “DCG-Informations” as well as occasional special issues on certain topics. Since 1999, the DCG has also been offering an annual sponsorship award. In addition, regional swap exchanges are organized.

The DCG was one of the co-organizers of the worldwide only symposium "Endangered Freshwater Fish of Tropical Ecosystems", held under the patronage of the limnologist Harald Sioli from March 9 to 12, 1995 in the Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig , Bonn, as a multi-day international workshop with exhibition was aligned.

Members run the “DCG Encyclopedia” project in their magazine and on their homepage. Not only species monographs and care instructions are published here, but also biographies of ichthyologists and important sources.

DCG sponsorship award

The DCG has been supporting scientific research on cichlids and their natural habitats with its own sponsorship award since 1999. It is awarded annually to scientific institutions around the world and benefits special research topics that are selected from a list of suggestions or applications. Both behavioral and systematic and zoogeographical research is supported in this way.
