Life

He did his military service as a radio operator in Buxtehude and during this time he played for the Buxtehuder SV , with which he rose in the Hamburg regional league in 1963 and played there in the 1963/4 season, while his membership in Alemannia 08 Düsseldorf was suspended, to which he followed returned to military service. In 1966 he was signed by the then regional league team Fortuna Düsseldorf and banned until September 1966 for violating the amateur statutes.

He played from 1966 to 1977 as a professional football player for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga and Regionalliga West and scored ten goals for Fortuna Düsseldorf as a defender in 176 Bundesliga games.

He made his debut in September 1966 on the 3rd match day of the 1966/67 Bundesliga season in the 2-4 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt . In his first season he became a regular player and made 27 games as a defender. After the season, Fortuna Düsseldorf rose to the second-rate Regionalliga West. In the decisive last game of the Regionalliga West season 1970/71 against VfR Neuss , which ended 3-1, he scored the goal to make it 1-0. The victory enabled them to qualify for the promotion round, in which Fortuna Düsseldorf, as group winners , secured promotion to the Bundesliga, unbeaten with only two draws .

From the beginning of the Bundesliga season 1971/72 he was team captain . In September 1973 he scored Fortuna Düsseldorf's first European goal in a 1-0 win against Danish club Næstved BK in the first leg of the first round of the UEFA Cup . In April 1976 he suffered a serious ankle injury and was treated for the remaining seven games in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga season 1975/76 against medical advice with analgesic injections in order to be able to be used. An ankle surgery was performed at the beginning of the 1976/77 Bundesliga season . Because of the aftermath of the injury, he had to end his professional career after the 1976/77 season, with only appearing in 13 friendly matches in his last season.

After his active time as a footballer, he was employed as a painter and varnisher by the city of Düsseldorf. He also worked as a youth coach for Fortuna Düsseldorf for more than 15 years. With the A-youth of Fortuna Düsseldorf he reached the championship of the Niederrheinliga in the 1992/93 season and the last time he took part in the finals of the German championship , but retired in the first round against the A-youth of VfB Stuttgart, who was trained by Ralf Rangnick . Fred Hesse was part of the traditional Fortuna 70 team, which was founded in 1982 .
