The Hibernia Reef is a coral reef in the eastern Indian Ocean . It is located in the Timor Sea , 42 kilometers northeast of the Ashmore Islands , 62 kilometers northwest of Cartier Island and about 390 kilometers off Australia's northwest coast.
The reef with the shape of a typical atoll ring and a total area of 11.5 km² is mostly flooded and therefore poses a danger to shipping. It was built in June 1811 by the English navigator Samuel Ashmore , captain of the ship Hibernia , together with the Southwestern Ashmore Islands discovered for Europe.
Despite its proximity to the Ashmore Islands and the Cartier Islands, the Hibernia Reef is politically not part of the Australian outer area of the " Ashmore and Cartier Islands ".
