Julio González (born August 26, 1981 in Asunción ) is a former Paraguayan football player.
Club career
In 2001 González made his debut in the Paraguayan first division at Club Guaraní . He achieved 17 goals in 29 games in his first year as a professional, after which he moved to the Italian second division club Vicenza Calcio for the 2001/02 season. There he did not succeed in asserting himself in the first team and was loaned out to the Argentine club Huracán de Tres Arroyos for half a year in 2002 . Back at Vicenza, González's situation in the team did not change and he remained without a first team appearance for a full year.
For this reason he was awarded again in 2003, this time to Paraguay, first to Tacuary Asunción and later to Nacional Asunción, where he found his form again and was also considered in the national teams. Back in Italy, he finally made it into the first team and made 23 league appearances (3 goals) in the 2004/05 season. He started the 2005/06 season very promisingly and scored eight goals in the first 15 league appearances.
A serious car accident in December 2005 on the way to Vicenza Airport brought his career to an abrupt end. He sustained numerous fractures and lost his left arm in the collision with two oncoming trucks.
Nevertheless, he continued his career and initially played in the amateur team from Vicenza, as he was not approved for use in the Italian professional leagues with his prosthetic arm. After his contract in Italy expired, he moved back to his homeland to Tacuary in 2007 and made his comeback in the Paraguayan first division on November 16, 2007. He ended his career in 2009.
National team
González took part in 2001 with the Paraguayan U20 national team at the Junior World Cup in Argentina and reached fourth place. He was a regular up until the quarterfinals and scored two goals in five games. In the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic, he was sent off the field after 27 minutes and was suspended for the semi-finals. In the game for 3rd place he was not used by the coach.
Shortly thereafter, he was nominated for the Copa America 2001 and came on as a substitute in all three preliminary round matches. However, the 20-year-old failed to score and Paraguay was eliminated from bottom of the table. Also in 2004 he was in Paraguay's squad at the Copa America . In his only appearance during the tournament, he scored in the preliminary round for a 1-0 lead against Brazil (final score 2-1), Paraguay failed in the following quarter-finals to Uruguay.
A month later, González took part with Paraguay's Olympic selection in the Olympic football tournament in Athens. González, however, came in the silver medal win of his country only to four short appearances and remained without a goal.
