The Sundargarh District ( Oriya ସୁନ୍ଦରଗଡ଼ ଜିଲ୍ଲା Sundaragaṛa Jillā ) is located in the west of the Indian state of Odisha . The administrative seat is the city of Sundargarh .
The district emerged from the princely states of Gangpur and Bonai , which were dissolved on January 1, 1948 and merged with the state of Orissa .
location
The district extends over an area of 9712 km². It is located in the mountains of the Eastern Ghats . The rivers Ib and Brahmani flow through it in a southerly direction.
Residents
In the 2011 census, the population was 2,093,437. The gender ratio was 973 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 73.34% (81.01% for men, 65.48% for women). 73.2% of the population are Hindu , 18.39% Christian , 3.41% Muslim .

The district consists of three sub-divisions : Bonai, Panposh and Sundargarh.
