Gangpur was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . Its capital was the place Sundargarh .

Until the time of the Marathas Wars , Gangpur was under the sovereignty of Sambalpur , in 1803 it was ceded to the British, returned to the Marathas in 1818 and finally came under British sovereignty in 1826. 1827-1947 Gangpur was an independent British protectorate . It was under the province of Bengal until 1905 , then Orissa (Odisha) and in 1892 had an area of 6454 km² and 108,000 inhabitants.

The last Raja , Bir Udit Pratap Shekhar Deo (1938–56), joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Gangpur was incorporated into Orissa and India . On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved. The Raja went into politics for the Ganatantra Parishad and was a minister in the government of Orissa from 1959 to 1961.
