John Wingfield (Knight)

Sir John Wingfield of Letheringham ( 1430–1481 ), was an English knight .

Life

Sir John was the eldest son of Sir Robert Wingfield (around 1403-1454), Lord of Letheringham in what is now the Suffolk Coastal District , and Elizabeth Goushill.

He served 1454/55 as sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk and was considered a follower of Henry VI. and the House of Lancaster . Sir John apparently did not take part in the wars of the Roses and therefore received pardon from the House of York, which had ruled since June 1461 . Sir John was even in June 1461 in the Tower of London to the Knight of the Bath beaten and King Edward IV. Summoned him in 1462 to his Privy Council . Sir John was sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk again in 1471/72 and was sent to Amiens by the king in 1477 to negotiate with the ambassador of France . In 1478 he was a Member of Parliament as Knight of the Shire for Norfolk and Suffolk .

Sir John died in May 1481.
