Career

Adhamjon Achilov started wrestling as a teenager in 1985. After the first major successes in the national field, he became a member of Dinamo Tashkent . He also joined the Uzbek army to secure his livelihood, but his real job was a wrestler. He concentrated entirely on free style and was or is trained by Mamur Rusijew.

Adhamjon Achilov's international career began in 1992 when he took part in the Junior World Championship (Cadets = age group up to the age of 16) in Istanbul . He took 5th place in the weight class up to 47 kg body weight. He took the same place at the Junior World Championships in 1993 (Espoirs = age group up to 20 years of age) in Athens in the weight class up to 48 kg body weight. In 1994 he won the Junior World Championship (Juniors = age group up to 18 years of age) in Budapest in the weight class up to 50 kg body weight behind Alireza Dabir from Iran and in front of Wiktor Efteni from the Ukraine and Nurdin Donbajew from Kyrgyzstan . He was also vice-junior world champion in 1995 at the Espoirs in Tehran . Here he placed behind Behnam Tayebi Kermani from Iran and ahead of Oleksandr Sacharuk from Ukraine.

In 1995 he started for the first time at an international senior championship. In Atlanta he started in the flyweight division, but did not get past 11th place. In the same year he finished second at the Central Asian Championships in Tashkent behind Vladimir Torgowkin from Kyrgyzstan and in 1996 he was first Asian champion in Xiaoshan / People's Republic of China ahead of Hideo Sasayama from Japan and Behnam Tayebi Kermani. In 1996 he also took part in the Olympic Games for the first time in Atlanta . In the flyweight he defeated Amiran Kartanow from Greece and Metin Topaktas from Turkey , but lost to Namig Abdullajew from Azerbaijan and Chechenol Mongush from Russia . With a win over Greg Wooedcroft from Canada he still fought his way to 7th place.

At the World Championships in 1997 in Krasnoyarsk and 1998 in Tehran, Adhamjon Achilov only achieved average results. In 1997 he was tenth and in 1998 eleventh. In 1999 he took 3rd place at the Asian Championship in Tashkent and won another medal. He then celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1999 World Cup in Ankara . He fought his way up to the final, in which he lost to the surprise man Kim Woo-yong from South Korea . He became vice- world champion in flyweight.

In 2000 he won a medal again at the Asian Championships in Guilin / People's Republic of China , because he finished third behind Jin Ju-dong from North Korea and Mohammad Aslani from Iran. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he won his first fight on points (8: 2) over Wassili Zeiher from Germany , but was already defeated in his second fight against Maulen Mamirow from Kazakhstan and only reached 8th place. In 2001 he just missed the medal ranks at the Asian Championships in Ulaanbaatar with a 4th place. The same thing happened to him at the 2002 World Cup in Tehran. He won there over Ghenadie Tulbea from Moldova , Oh Jun-seok from South Korea and Chikara Tanabe from Japan , but lost to Namig Abdullajew and Oleksandr Sacharuk and came in 4th place.

From 2003 Adhamjon Achilov was replaced in Uzbekistan by Dilshod Mansurov as the No. 1 bantamweight freestyle wrestler. He was therefore only occasionally used at the international championships, but remained active on the international wrestling mat until 2009. In 2004 he started at the Asian Cup in Tehran and won the title there for the second time ahead of Bajaraagiin Naranbaatar from Mongolia and Kim Hyo-sub from South Korea. In 2006 he was finally at the start again at a world championship . In Guangzhou he took a good 5th place. He got three wins there. Radoslaw Velikow from Bulgaria, who defeated him in the third round, prevented him from progressing . Adhamjon Achilov lost the battle for the bronze medal against Samuel Henson from the United States with 1: 4 on points.

In 2008 he became military world champion in bantamweight in Split ahead of the Indian Sandeep VII and Hassan Mordghaliei from Iran and in 2009 he was also at the start of the German Grand Prix in Dortmund , where he finished behind Rahul Balaseheb Ware from India and Marcel Ewald from Germany 3rd place.
