Tyrone Clinton Spong (born September 3, 1985 in Paramaribo ) is a Surinamese - Dutch Muay Thai fighter and boxer .

Career

Kickboxing

In 1990, Spong immigrated to the Netherlands from Suriname at the age of 5. He grew up in Amsterdam , was often involved in street fights and started kickboxing in a gym when he was 13. At his first Muay Thai match he was 15 years old and won by knockout in the first round. In 2003, his first year as a professional, he won 12 fights that year. In 2004 he fought in the Battle of Zaandam against Rafi Zouheir and won his first European Muay Thai title (World Kickboxing Network). In 2006 Spong defeated the Muay Thai veterans Joerie Mes and Kaoklai Kaennorsing by knockout

Spong became World Champion and Muay Thai Cruiserweight Champion in the World Full Contact Association in 2008 after defeating Aurelien Duarte. In the " K-1 World Grand Prix 2008 in Amsterdam" Spong met Azem Maksutaj and won by knockout in the second round. On November 29th, 2008 he became the first “It's Showtime 95MAX” world champion, after defeating Zabit Samedov by unanimous decision on points.

At the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Spong met the heavyweight world champion Kyōtarō Fujimoto and won on points. On April 3, 2010 Spong fought against Jérôme Le Banner . Spong broke his right hand in the first round and was knocked out. Despite a strong return, he lost on points. Spong qualified for the K-1 World Grand Prix Final 2010 and defeated the veteran Ray Sefo in the tournament. In the quarterfinals he lost to eventual winner Alistair Overeem on points.

On January 28, 2012, Spong met Melvin Manhoef at "It's Showtime 2012 in Leeuwarden" and won the decision unanimously. On June 30, 2012 Spong met Peter Aerts and won by knockout in the third round.

Spong made his mixed martial arts debut against Travis Bartlett at the World Series of Fighting 1 on November 3, 2012 in the light heavyweight division and won by knockout in the first round. On August 10, 2013, he defeated Angel DeAnda on points.

In 2013 Spong met Remy Bonjasky and won by knockout in the second round. Spong became Glory 95kg Slam Champion after beating Michael Duut and Filip Verlinden and then defeating Danyo Ilunga in the final by a technical knockout in 16 seconds. On October 12, 2013, he defeated Nathan Corbett by technical knockout in the second round.

In 2015 he resigned from kickboxing to start professional boxing.

Boxing

Spong made his debut in professional boxing on March 6, 2015 and won by knockout in the first round against the Hungarian Gabor Farkas. By August 31, 2018, he had 12 wins without loss, won all fights early and won the WBC and WBO Latino heavyweight titles.
