Insurance of the fighters

On May 9, 2011, it was announced that Zuffa will be offering year-round insurance against all types of injuries for every fighter who is under contract with the UFC . The insurance covers any injuries or accidents, whether they occur during training or competition or outside of it.

In the past, fighters were only insured against injuries incurred during an official match, and then only up to $ 100,000. If a fighter was injured outside of an official fight, he had to pay the treatment costs himself.

The insurance came into effect on June 1, 2011 and is offered by HCC Insurance Holdings .

  • The insurance applies to all fighters who are under contract with either Strikeforce or the UFC
  • The insurance applies to all fighters, whether they are US residents or not
  • The insurance contributions are paid by Zuffa. There are no costs for the fighters.
  • The insurance can also be used by fighters for whom a new fight is not yet planned.
  • The insurance also covers dental treatments.

Lawsuit against New York State

On November 15, 2011, it was announced that Zuffa LLC had sued New York State . The lawsuit is directed against the ban on mixed martial arts in New York, which has remained unchanged since 1997. Well-known MMA fighters such as Jon Jones and Frankie Edgar joined the lawsuit . In the complaint, Zuffa LLC accuses the state of New York that the ban goes too far and, among other things, hampers the free economic movement between the states. In addition, mixed martial arts is a type of live public entertainment and is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The application comprises a total of 123 pages and was drafted by the major law firm Morrison & Foerester .
