Miesha Theresa Tate (born August 18, 1986 in Tacoma , Washington ) is a former American mixed martial arts fighter and ex-bantamweight world champion at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Strikeforce . As an active MMA fighter, she was one of the best in the world in this sport between 2007 and 2016.

life and career

Born and raised in Tacoma , Washington , the young Miesha Tate fought on the boys' wrestling team in high school . In 2005 she was able to win the state and then the national title in the girls' category.

During her time at university, Miesha Tate came to MMA and started training at Central Washington University . Tate made her amateur debut in mixed martial arts in 2006 at USA MMA: Wanted Fighting Challenge , which she lost to Elizabeth Posener in the second round after a technical knockout.

She made her professional debut on November 24, 2007 at the HOOKnSHOOT: Bodog Fight Women's Tournament . She won the first round of the tournament against Jan Finney by referee decision, but lost the subsequent fight against Kaitlin Young by knockout after only 30 seconds in the first round.

On June 27, 2008, Tate played her first fight at Strikeforce , which she won against Elaina Maxwell by unanimous decision. In the following years, Tate fought a few more fights, mostly for Strikeforce, but also for other organizations, which she was mostly able to win. On July 30, 2011, Tate won the Strikeforce world bantamweight title from Marloes Coen. However, she had to hand this over to Ronda Rousey when she defended her title on March 3, 2012 , after tapping her opponent's armbar .

In February 2013, Tate moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and went there on April 13, 2013 to her first fight against Cat Zingano, which she lost to a technical knockout in the third round. On December 28, 2013 she fought at UFC 168 - again against Rousey - for the bantamweight title of the UFC, but she had to take a defeat here again by giving up in the third round. On April 19, 2014, Tate was able to achieve a victory over Liz Carmouche by unanimous decision. This was followed by a fight against Sara McMann at UFC 183 on January 31, 2015, which she could also win by point decision.

By defeating Jessica Eye, Tate qualified for a title shot against Holly Holm . On March 5, 2016, Tate defeated Holm at UFC 196 by abandonment in the fifth round, making her the third bantamweight title holder in UFC history. However, she had to give the title back to Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 after losing a fight against them by giving up in the first round.

On November 12, 2016, she played a fight against Raquel Pennington at UFC 205 , which she surprisingly lost after three rounds by a unanimous decision on points. In the following interview, Tate announced her immediate retirement from MMA after a decision she had made spontaneously.

Tate played a total of 28 fights in mixed martial arts (including three amateur fights). She left the ring 20 times as a winner and eight times as a loser.
