Stack-O-Tracks is an album by the US band The Beach Boys . It was released on August 19, 1968 by Capitol Records .

History of origin

The Beach Boys record sales stagnated in 1968. Both 1967 albums, Smiley Smile and Wild Honey, flopped and Friends did not meet the record company's expectations either. When it became clear that the Beach Boys would not record another album in 1968, the record company decided to release an instrumental album . The tracks offer a cross-section of the various Beach Boys albums. Everything is included, from hits to major album tracks. In some places you can still hear remnants of the mixed singing.

The idea behind Stack-O-Tracks was to give music-loving fans (who didn't play instruments) the opportunity to sing along to the songs in a simple setting. The album contained a detailed booklet in which all texts and the chord tables were printed.

With Stack-O-Tracks, the Beach Boys released one of the first karaoke LPs in history. It was only much later that similar albums by other artists were created. Only the LP The Surfing Song Book by the Rincon Surfside Band (Dunhill 50001, 1965) , released three years earlier, followed a comparable concept with instrumental versions of well-known surf music hits; the album included the lyrics to sing along. However, unlike Stack-O-Tracks , it did not contain the original instrumental tracks of the hits, but new recordings.

The album received little or no acceptance from the fans and accordingly sold poorly. It was the first Beach Boys release that did not hit the charts. Due to the bad sale, the album remained one of the most sought-after for collectors, after the first edition was sold out, no more were pressed. There was no secondary release for 20 years until Capitol Records released the album with Beach Boys' Party in 1990 ! republished. In 2001 this pressing also appeared in Germany. With Help Me, Rhonda , California Girls and Our Car Club, the package contains three additional instrumental versions as bonus tracks . The new edition contains neither lyrics nor chords.
