20/20 is a music album by the US band The Beach Boys . The album 20/20 made it to # 68 on the US Billboard charts. It made it to # 3 on the UK charts.

Emergence

The Beach Boys decided in 1968 not to extend the expiring contract with their music label Capitol Records . The last album they owed Capitol, they called it 20/20, indicating that it was the 20th album for Capitol and thus the 20th for the Beach Boys, if you count all hit collections. The recordings took place from June to November 1968.

After the bad sales of the previous album Friends , Brian Wilson had decided to take a break. Since the Beach Boys had to survive musically, they decided to continue without him for the time being. Brian Wilson, however, never completely disappeared from the scene. He continued to write songs, but hardly worked on later albums.

20/20 is a mixture of old singles , fragments from the smile sessions and newly recorded material.

The album wasn't the last release for Capitol. To fully fulfill their contract, they recorded the single Breakaway with B-side Celebrate the News . Both songs were added to the 2001 rerelease Friends / 20/20 .

Song info

The " nostalgic song" Do It Again was the Beach Boys' last top 20 hit in the 1960s. At the same time he was ranked number 1 in England and Australia, especially in Europe the band was very popular these days.

In addition to three cover versions , Bruce Johnston made his songwriting and producer debut for the Beach Boys. He wrote and produced the instrumental piece The Nearest Faraway Place . The strings were arranged by Van McCoy , who was still unknown at the time . In addition, Johnston and Carl Wilson produced the title Bluebirds Over the Mountains , a cover version of Ersel Hickey . Johnston actually wanted to release this title as a solo single, only with the intervention of Mike Love it became a Beach Boys piece.

Dennis Wilson contributed three songs. The song Never Learn Not to Love , under which "Dennis Wilson" is given as the author, comes largely from the pen of Charles Manson and was originally called Cease to Exist . He was friends with Wilson in 1968 and lived with him for some time. Dennis changed a lot of the music and lyrics, which angered Manson. The title Be with me is also said to have originated with Charles Manson. Manson didn't want to be mentioned in the credits, however.

In the credits to the song All I want to do you can hear Dennis Wilson having sex with a prostitute. Stephen Kalinich wrote the lyrics for this song but did not want to be featured in the official credits when he heard the finished piece.

I Can Hear Music is a song written by Phil Spector for the Ronettes . Carl Wilson appeared here for the first time as a producer. The song reached # 24 on the Billboard charts, making it the Beach Boys' last top 40 hit for the time being.

With Our Prayer and Cabinessence , the Beach Boys released two songs from the Smile sessions . Our Prayer was supposed to open the Smile album. It is an a cappella song, but it has no lyrics. In 1968 the vocals of this song, recorded in 1966, were overdubbed . Cabinessence was written with the help of Van Dyke Parks.

The title Time to Get Alone , which comes from Brian Wilson, was originally planned for the band The Redwoods (later: Three Dog Night ). The Beach Boys had already recorded this version for the Friends album. This was also produced by Carl.

The song Cotton Fields was recorded in 1969 and produced by Brian Wilson. The song is from Leadbelly . In 1970 Alan Jardine produced a new version of this song and released it as a single. The result was a # 1 spot in the Netherlands and a top 5 hit in the UK, Spain , South Africa , Australia and Japan . The single flopped in the US.

For a long time there were rumors that Ersel Hickey was a pseudonym for Paul McCartney .
