Additional information about the songs
Little Deuce Coupe was already released on the previous album. The song reached number 15 on the singles charts as the B-side of Surfer Girl . The song is about a Ford Model B that Mike Love owned. On this song, Hal Blaine plays the drums instead of Dennis Wilson.
Ballad of Ole Betsy is an ode to the aging Betsy. Betsy was the family vehicle of the Wilson family.
Be True to Your School is the only song on the album that isn't about cars. There is also a single version, which was recorded with the additional help of a marching band and a cheerleader choir. The choir was imitated by the American group The Honeys . This girl group was produced by Brian Wilson in the 1960s, but was quite unsuccessful. A member of the band was Marilyn Rovell, who became Brian Wilson's wife in 1964. This single version reached the top 10.
Car Crazy Cutie was later re-recorded by Brian Wilson, Bob Norberg and other friends under the project name The Survivors . The song was now called Pamela Jean and was released as a single by Capitol Records, but failed to get into the charts.
Cherry, Cherry Coupe is a rewritten version of Land Ahoy , a 1962 song that was later released on the Rarities Collection .
409 was the B-side of the Beach Boys ' first single and was already released on Surfin' Safari .
Spirit of America is about the automobile of the same name and its driver, Craig Breedlove , who set a new speed record in 1963. The song title also served as the name for a compilation by the Beach Boys released in 1975.
Our Car Club comes from the previous album.
No-Go Showboat is about a car that looks very good but can't go fast.
A Young Man Is Gone is a tribute to James Dean . The title is a cover version with changed text. The original is from Bobby Troup and is better known as Their Heart Were Full of Spring
