The Beach Boys is the 27th album by the US band The Beach Boys . It was released in May 1985 by the record company Caribou Records (Caribou ZK 39946). The album reached number 53 on the US Billboard charts and number 60 on the UK sales charts. Steve Levine produced "The Beach Boys" .

Background to the album

The Beach Boys hadn't released any new material since their last album in 1980. Mike Love and Carl Wilson devoted themselves increasingly to their solo careers. Only after Dennis Wilson's death was work on new songs again.

The album

Bruce Johnston got in touch with the music producer Steve Levine . Steve was a friend of Bruce's. Levine agreed to produce the Beach Boys album. Bruce also had the idea that Mike Love should work with Bruce's longtime friend Terry Melcher to write new songs. Love was initially reluctant to work with an outside songwriter. But they met anyway and began to work together. The song Getcha Back came out of this collaboration. Getcha Back was released as a single in 1985 and made it to number 26 on the Billboard charts.

In addition to this song, the second single "It's getting late" made it into the charts and reached number 82. The third single, "She believes in love again", did not reach the charts.

The album was staged by producer Levine with a number of computer-controlled elements. A drummer was omitted, the album was provided with the drum sound via a drum computer. Only on the song "California Calling" you can hear a set of drums played by Ringo Starr . Myrna Smith Schilling was involved in two songs . She was a member of Carl's solo band and had written the lyrics for his solo albums.

Song information

  • She Believes in Love Again came 26th on the Adult Contemporary Charts but missed the Billboard .
  • Male Ego was not included on the LP version and only appeared as the B-side for the single Getcha Back . It was included on the CD version.
  • The Beach Boys shot a music video for Getcha Back in which they only have short appearances. The text is once again about nostalgia. The song features the typical falsetto voice for the Beach Boys of the 1960s, sung by Brian Wilson and Jeffrey Foskett .
