Carl and the Passions - "So Tough" is an album by the US band The Beach Boys . It was released on May 15, 1972 .

The album title is a nod to a high school band that consisted of Brian Wilson , his brother Carl, and their cousin Mike Love , and thus practically a forerunner of the Beach Boys.

The album was produced by the Beach Boys, but especially by Carl Wilson. The album is - for the Beach Boys - unusually R&B- heavy.

History of origin

Brian Wilson, head of the band in the 1960s, was hardly involved in the recording of the album, he still suffered from the mental health problems that arose while working on Smile . Bruce Johnston had left the band after falling out with Jack Rieley , the band's manager at the time. He now wanted to continue working as a freelance songwriter and producer. Drummer Dennis Wilson sustained a serious hand injury in 1971 and was unable to play the drums for years. This led to the Beach Boys adding two new members to the band, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin. Fataar and Chaplin were colored from South Africa . Together with Fataar's brothers they formed the band The Flame . This band had received a recording contract with the Beach Boys own record company Brother Records and was produced by Carl. In 1971 the band broke up. This was one of the reasons Fataar and Chaplin gladly accepted the offer to switch to the Beach Boys.

Carl and the Passions - “So Tough” reached number 50 on the US Billboard charts. In the UK charts, it advanced to number 25.

The album was reissued in 2000 together with the successor Holland and the EP Mt. Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) . The liner notes for Carl and the Passions were written by Elton John and Scott McCaughey.

Additional information about the songs

  • You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone was written by Brian Wilson and Tandym Alder. The working title was Beatrice from Baltimore . Jack Rieley, manager of the Beach Boys, rewrote the text. The song contains borrowings from the Doo Wop .
  • Here She Comes was written by the two new members Fataar and Chaplin. Musically it is a blues number.
  • He Come Down is a song about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , the founder of Transcendental Meditation . Carl and Mike Love were or are followers of this meditation technique. The song is held in the gospel style and was recorded with the help of a Hammond organ and a church organ. The dynamic arrangement of the song also includes sound gestures and choral singing in which the Beach Boys sound like a whole gospel choir.
  • Marcella was again a song based on a Wilson Allmer composition. It was a somewhat crude declaration of love to his masseuse. Rieley also changed these lyrics to make the band sound more serious.
  • Hold On Dear Brother is a country song written by Fataar and Chaplin. The country arrangement also includes the use of a steel guitar .
  • Make It Good should initially be used for a planned solo album by Dennis Wilson. However, the album never came out.
  • All This Is That is based on a poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken . This song also relates to the Transcendental Meditation .
  • Cuddle Up was written by Dennis and Daryl Dragon (from the duo Captain & Tennille ). Dragon arranged the piece. This piece was also intended for Dennis' solo album and appeared there under the title "Old Movie". Dragon was touring with the Beach Boys for many years.
