(1964)

Beach Boys Concert is the eighth album by the Beach Boys . It was released on October 19, 1964 and landed as the first rock live album at number one on the US LP hit parade. It spent 54 weeks in the top 100 .

history

The recordings are from a performance by the band on August 1, 1964 in the "Civic Auditorium" in Sacramento (California) . However, the fans at this concert were so loud (and the recording technology so little developed) that many of the recordings (e.g. from Don't Back Down , Be True To Your School , Surfer Girl ) were unsuitable for publication and some others (especially I Get Around and Fun, Fun, Fun ) had to be overdubbed in the studio . I get around was even completely re-recorded in the studio and only accompanied by the recorded screams of the fans. Only five songs on this LP are really an original recording of this concert. The voice that the Beach Boys announces at the beginning belongs to Fred Vail , who at that time, before his later career as a concert organizer, was working as a disc jockey in Sacramento .

In addition to five original songs by the Beach Boys, the album mainly contains cover versions . Most of these were never used on a Beach Boys studio album.

The album was released in stereo, produced by Brian Wilson .

Song info

The songs Fun, Fun, Fun , Little Deuce Coupe , In My Room , Hawaii and I Get Around are from the Beach Boys.

The Little Old Lady from Pasadena was a top three hit by Jan & Dean . Roger Christian, co-songwriter and friend of Brian Wilson , had worked on the lyrics. Brian Wilson would later work on many of the duo's songs.

Little Deuce Coupe includes an announcement from Mike Love introducing the band.

Long Tall Texan is originally from Murry Kellum. A popular version of the song was recorded by the Kingsmen . Here Mike Love briefly plays the saxophone.

Monster Mash , by Bobby Pickett , was a number 1 hit for his band The Crypt-Kickers in 1962 . The Beach Boys changed a small line of text to include their name in the song. The record cover shows the band playing this song.

Let's Go Trippin ' is a cover version of Dick Dale . It was already released on the Beach Boys' second album .

Papa-Oam-Mow-Mow is another cover version, this time by The Rivingtons . A studio version is at the Beach Boys' Party! -Album.

The Wanderer is the most famous song by Dion . Dennis Wilson took over the lead vocals, the drums were played by Brian Wilson.

Graduation Day is from The Four Freshmen . At the end of the song there is a surprising use by Dennis. A studio version can be found as a bonus track on the new release The Beach Boys Today / Summer Days (And Summer Nights !!) (2001).

Johnny B. Goode is from Chuck Berry .
