Surf's Up (in German: "high surf") is an album by the US band "The Beach Boys". It was released on August 30, 1971 . The album was released in the Beach Boys' own record label Brother Records and became its partner Reprise Records / Warner Bros. distributed.

History of origin

In 1971 the "Beach Boys" hired a new manager named Jack Rieley , who was also head of Brother Records , the Beach Boys' own record company. Rieley was of the opinion that the "Beach Boys" had to give up their "surfer image" for good. You should cover contemporary topics in the future. The main aim of the texts was to address environmental and social issues in order to appeal to a younger audience. His vision was to turn the Beach Boys into the musical keepers of the ecological system. Jack Rieley not only limited himself to his role as manager, but also took an active part in the songwriting process.

Several concerts in the run-up to and shortly after the album was released were intended to underline the change in image. The Beach Boys played benefit concerts and performed on one of the anti-war marches on May 3, 1971 in Washington, DC .

During the years 1969 to 1971 the Beach Boys had very creative phases and recorded numerous songs. Dennis Wilson also worked non-stop in the studio. Some pieces created during this time should be featured on Surf's-Up! - Land album. There were 4th of July , Wouldn't it be nice to live again , Old Movie and It's a new day . But he couldn't agree on the order with the other Beach Boys, so he decided to withhold the songs for his solo album. Carl Wilson experimented on the album (especially on his own composition Feel Flows ) with the then new Moog synthesizer .

The cover is a graphic implementation of the sculpture End of the Trail by the American sculptor James Earle Fraser. The image was created by Ed Thrasher .

Song info

Don't Go Near The Water is one of those titles the Beach Boys use to raise awareness of human pollution.

The title track of the album Surf's Up! is a song from the unreleased Smile album from 1967 (see Brian Wilson presents Smile ). It was written by Brian Wilson in collaboration with Van Dyke Parks . According to Brian Wilson, he wrote most of the text. For the first part of the song, the original backing track from the sessions for the Smile album from 1966/67 was used; the lead vocals were sung by Carl Wilson and dates back to 1971. The second part comes from a demo recording for a television documentary from 1966 with lead vocals by Brian Wilson, in 1971 only slightly supplemented by a synthesizer bass track, as does part three, where the other Beach Boys complement Brian's piano playing and vocals. The song was released as the second single with the B-side Don't Go Near the Water , but could not place itself in the charts.

Long Promised Road is Carl Wilson's debut as a composer and is about the dreams of the settlers . It was the first single on the album, and the B-side read 'Til I Die . The single was ranked # 89 on the Hot 100, the sales figures fell short of expectations.

Take a Load Off Your Feet comes from the sessions on the previous album Sunflower .

Student Demonstration Time is a song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller , to which Mike Love wrote new lyrics. The original was called Riot on Cell Block # 9 . The new text is about the student movement . The song mentions the Free Speech Movement , the riots in People's Park in Berkeley and Isla Vista , as well as the so-called "Jackson State killings" and the Kent State massacre . Brian Wilson later expressed his dislike for the song with the words "too far-out for me". The song was released as a single and was found in low chart positions in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

A Day in the Life of a Tree is written from a first-person perspective. It deals with the environmental problem, this time the subject of air pollution, using an old tree that looks back on its life. The song was written by Brian Wilson and Jack Rieley. Jack Rieley also sang the lead vocals for this piece, while Van Dyke Parks immortalized himself as the singer in the closing sequence .

'Til I Die is another Brian Wilson composition. It is about Brian Wilson's feelings at the time: "I was feeling kind of small, and I wrote a song about how small I felt".
