15 Big Ones is a music album by the American rock band The Beach Boys . The title is a reference to the fifteen tracks that the album contains, as well as the 15 years of band history since 1961. The album was produced by Brian Wilson .

prehistory

The Beach Boys had n't released any new material since 1973 when they released Holland . They focused on winning back their audiences through extensive tours. In late 1974, when they had enough material together, Capitol Records released the heat compilation Endless Summer , which hit # 1 on the Billboard charts. All songs were written and produced by Brian Wilson. Wilson had withdrawn more and more from the band at the end of the 1960s. The group tried to get Wilson back on board to produce the next album.

Brian Wilson began writing new songs with his former partner Steven Kalinich . Among them was Child of Winter , which was released as a single just before Christmas 1974.

15 big ones

The Beach Boys first started recording some well-known rock 'n' roll classics. They did so because Wilson hadn't produced any material for several years and this was supposed to act as a test run. They recorded around a dozen of these classics. Then they dared to try new, own pieces. After a while, Brian Wilson lost interest in this project. He left the studio saying, “I've recorded enough. I don't want to record anymore, the album is finished ”. Al Jardine and Mike Love wanted to take advantage of the continued popularity of the best-of Endless Summer and pushed for the existing material to be released quickly. Carl and Dennis Wilson wanted to take their time to work on new songs. Finally, Love and Jardine prevail. The Beach Boys had to pull together and use a show of hands to select 15 songs from the recorded material to be included on the album.

The album sold very well due to the popularity of the band and the initiated "Brian is Back" campaign, while critics were dissatisfied with the material heard. The album was backed by synthesizers, Brian Wilson's voice was untrained and he even had to "cheat" in the first octave using studio technology.

As studio musicians , Hal Blaine (drums), Billy Hinsche , Ed Carter, Lyle Ritz , Ray Poleman (bass and guitar), Brian Wilson's wife Marilyn Rovell, Toni Tenille and Bruce Johnston (all three background vocals) took part in the recordings for the album part.

Chart successes

The album reached number 8 on the US Billboard charts and number 31 on the UK charts. It was the Beach Boys' first studio album since 1966 to receive a gold record .

Song info

  • Had to Phone Ya was written by Brian for the duo "Spring", which consisted of his wife Marilyn and her sister Dianne Rovell. This shot shows the Beach Boys version of this piece.
  • Back Home was recorded in 1963 and was penned by Brian Wilson and his roommate at the time, Bob Norberg. The song dispenses with studio musicians and sound experiments.
  • It's OK was released as a single and reached # 29 on the US charts. Roy Wood and his band Wizzard play the horns as guests . The song Had to Phone Ya was used as the B-side .
  • Everyone's in Love With You , That Same Song and TM Song are a tribute to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , the founder of Transcendental Meditation . Several Beach Boys were, at least temporarily, supporters of this teaching. That Same Song was staged with a gospel choir and is a slight allusion to the fact that the fans only wanted to hear their old hits.
  • Susie Cincinnati is about a cab driver in Ohio . It has already been used as the B-side for Add Some Music to Your Day and Child of Winter . It was originally supposed to be used for the Sunflower album . The album version is a new mix. Dennis Wilson agreed to the release because he no longer knew that the song had already been released.
  • In the Still of the Night was written by Fred Parris and recorded in 1954 by his doo-wop group The Five Satins .
  • A Casual Look is another doo-woop song and is originally from The Six Teens . It was written by songwriter Ed Wells.
  • Just Once in My Life is originally by The Righteous Brothers and was another Phil Spector production. Brian and Carl Wilson sing the song in a duet .

Sorted out songs

Songs that weren't considered for the album included the covers of You've Lost That Lovin 'Feelin' and Come and Go with Me . A large number of their own tracks were also not taken into account, such as My Diane , which was only released on the MIU album in 1978 . The Wilson / Kalinich material, which was made available to some critics, was enthusiastically received. However, none of this appeared in the years to come. It wasn't until 2000 that Brian Wilson released the newly recorded song California Feeling .
