In 1988 they contributed the song Kokomo to the soundtrack of the film " Cocktail ". The song was the first number 1 in America since 1966 and was Good Vibrations . After that, the Beach Boys were given a contract for an album by their old record company Capitol Records. The Beach Boys were allowed to release five new songs on the album. Mike Love and Terry Melcher co-wrote three new titles. Alan Jardine contributed the song Island Girl , which he also produced. In addition there were the already released songs Wipe Out and Kokomo . Brian Wilson contributed the seventh song In My Car . In addition to these pieces, Capitol added three songs from the 60s to the album, which met protests from the Beach Boys.

Song info

Most of the songs come from various soundtrack albums. The title track comes from the soundtrack to the film Brennpunkt LA , the three older tracks were used in films beforehand: I Get Around was featured in “ Good Morning, Vietnam ”, “Wouldn't It Be Nice” in “ Der große Frust ” and California Girls used in Soul Man . The latter was also re-released in 1985 by David Lee Roth . One of the new songs, Make It Big , was used in the movie "The Beverly Hills Wild".

In my car , produced by Brian Wilson, is an outtake from his solo album of the same name.

Wipe Out is a cover version of the popular hit by The Surfaris , with text added for the instrumental piece. The hip-hop group The Fat Boys is involved in this version . The two groups take turns in the style of the Walk This Way collaboration between Run-DMC and Aerosmith . Mike Love initially wanted to stage this song with Run-DMC, but then terminated his own contract. Apart from Brian Wilson, no other Beach Boys are featured on this recording. This piece was produced by Albert Cabrera and Tony Moran.

After Kokomo, Somewhere Near Japan is the second collaboration between the Beach Boys and John Phillips , the former band leader of The Mamas and the Papas .

The album was no longer reproduced by Capitol Records and is therefore no longer available in stores.
