Brosamen von des Herren Tisch , later just “Brosamen” ( breadcrumbs alluding to Mark 7:28), was a Christian magazine that appeared in the vicinity of Bern and Biel or the Emmental.

Founder and Editor

The founder and editor of the paper, Franz Eugen Schlachter , the well-known translator of the miniature Bible , published it from 1888, initially on a private basis. He sold it in 1893 to the Evangelical Society , which sold it as its official paper. Schlachter remained editor of the paper until 1907. When he switched to the Free Evangelical Congregation in Bern as a preacher , his work was divided. Part of it was taken over by Gottfried Fankhauser , who later became President of the Evangelical Society of the Canton of Bern . At its peak it had 6,000 subscriptions.

content

A spiritual article was followed by biographies of revival preachers , such as: B. by D. L. Moody , or reports of revivals or biographical-edifying life pictures or stories such. B. " Resli, the goods boy ". Schlachter retold the fate of the contract child Andreas Balli, called "Resli". Further edifying church history stories were z. B. " Master Pippin " or " Jarousseau, the pastor of the desert ". There were also contributions to general education, e.g. B. Excerpts from (presumably) Brehm's animal life about certain animals, e.g. B. the cuckoo, which follows here excerpts:

“What is more, what is praiseworthy about this poultry is its voracity. Otherwise it is not a noble quality, especially in husbands; But the cuckoo doesn't eat cheese and sausage, only caterpillars that nobody else likes because they are so hairy. The nun caterpillar, that dreaded forest devastator, has a sworn enemy in him. So the cuckoo also becomes a culture fighter by eating nuns; But there is still a difference between him and a radical councilor in that the latter eats the nuns out of hatred, but the cuckoo eats them out of love ”. The polemical swipe at husbands and politics is followed as a spiritual dodging remark: "So it happens that you never find more than a single young cuckoo in the nest - the image of perfect selfishness". The article ends with the following admonition: “Remember it, fool and don't be a cuckoo who throws the weaker out of the nest” .

There were also travel reports, e.g. B. from the Holy Land, and finally a column “On the world situation”, in which the author spiritually assessed and commented on regional and world political events. Here you can find reports about rescue operations in the mountains, about a snake hunt in the Bernese Jura, reports from the Berlin Reichstag, comments on wars in the British Empire, etc. Some of the articles were exclusive at the time of butcher. B. the reports about the healing preacher Cyprian Vignes from the Cevennes village Vialas in southern France, appeared only in the "crumbs".

style

Butcher's way of writing can be described both as a pointed spiritual pen and as slightly sarcastic. Despite this nature, the content was of a high standard and witty. The classic crumbs (until 1907) bore his signature very strongly and were shaped by his spiritual attitude and his view of church history.

influence

The Brosamen were an important magazine for the rural environment of Bern and the sanctification movement and the Evangelical Society . Schlachter conveyed not only spiritual content to his readers, but also general education and contemporary historical and political foresight.

Archiving

The old editions of Franz Eugen Schlachter's "Brosamen" were handed over to the State Archives in Bern by the Evangelical Society . The old copies can be viewed there.

continuation

The Brosamen appeared until the end of 1965. The follow-up publication was the magazine Wort und Werk (1966–1991) published by the Evangelical Society of the Canton of Bern together with the Association of Regional Church Communities of the Canton of Bern , in which the Brosamen and Der Heilsbote were absorbed. The magazine has since been renamed Wort + warch .
