Sanctification movement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sanctification movement is understood in the broader sense as a Christian revival movement of the modern age . She attaches great importance to the fact that her followers have experienced a “real” conversion and that they live according to the ethical commandments of Christianity and live as sinlessly as possible . Specifically, depending on the circumstances of the time, this found expression in the emphasis on evangelism , diakonia , charity , abstinence and practical sanctification .

Roots of the sanctification movement

One of the earliest sanctification movements was Methodism . Awakened or radical pietism ( Gottfried Arnold ) can also be assigned to this direction. Other churches that are included in the sanctification movement are the Salvation Army , the Churches of Christ , the Church of the Nazarene , the Church for Christ and, in Switzerland, the Evangelical Society of the Canton of Bern. The book The higher Christian Life by William Edwin Boardman (1810–1886) as well as the couple Michael Baxter (1834–1910) and Elizabeth Baxter, b. Foster (1837–1926), who later took over the Beth-Shan pastoral care and sick home in London. Baxter also published The Christian Herald magazine. Franz Eugen Schlachter stayed with the Baxter couple on his trip to England in 1884.

Formative personalities of the sanctification movement

In a narrower sense, the expression is used within the biography of Franz Eugen Schlachter for the third wave of the sanctification movement around 1874/75 in England, Germany and Switzerland. This refers to the work of Robert Pearsall Smith (1827–1898) and his wife Hannah Whitall Smith (1832–1911). The sanctification movement appeared in all awakened circles of pietism , the Protestant churches and the free churches . In addition to Robert Pearsall Smith, the decisive people were Arnold Bovet , Andrew Murray , Carl Heinrich Rappard and Dora Rappard , Otto Stockmayer , Ernst Gebhardt , but also Dwight Lyman Moody , Ira David Sankey , Anna von Wattenwyl , Dorothea Trudel and later Franz Eugen Schlachter . The song of the sanctification movement " Jesus saves me now " is also known. Although he belongs to the circle of the " Open Brothers ", the orphanage father Georg Müller should also be mentioned here, as well as the founder of the China Inland Mission , Hudson Taylor , and in China, to a limited extent, Watchman Nee .

Revival of the sanctification movement

The sanctification movement is dated from 1874 to 1909. The ideas continue to have an effect through new editions of edification books from the sanctification movement.
