Stephan Holthaus (born September 19, 1962 ) is a German evangelical theologian , professor of Christian ethics and apologetics with a focus on business ethics and rector of the Free Theological University of Giessen (FTH).

Life

Holthaus' denominational background is in the Brethren movement , he is a member of a Baptist church . From 1983 to 1988 he studied Protestant theology at the Free Theological Academy (FTA) in Giessen . A year as a guest student at the Philipps University of Marburg was followed by three-year doctoral studies from 1989 to 1992 at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Leuven ( Belgium ). In 1992 he received his doctorate in theology here. From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a lecturer in church history at the Brake Bible School . The FTH Gießen appointed Holthaus as lecturer for church history and ethics in 1995 and as dean in 1997 . From 2008 to 2012 he was dean and lecturer for ethics at the FTH, from 2012 to 2015 Vice-Rector . In 2015, a professorship for Christian ethics and apologetics with a focus on business ethics followed. Holthaus took over the rectorate in January 2016 as the successor to Helge Stadelmann .

His main research interests are the sanctification movement , ethics and trend research .

From 1992 to 1997 he worked as part of the research project "Bibliography on Church History" at the Institute for Basic Research on theory of Science in Paderborn in collaboration a. a. with Lutz E. von Padberg . This research project culminated in the publication of the list of books on church history .

From 2006 to 2015 Holthaus was director of the Institute for Ethics and Values , which is located on the FTH campus, but is not institutionally connected. Under Holthaus, the institute pursued the goal of “bringing society back to Christian values”. From 2008 to 2013 he was a lecturer in business ethics at the TH Mittelhessen . Holthaus has been a member of the main board of the German Evangelical Alliance since 2010 . In 2018 he was elected chairman of the Conference of Biblical Training Centers.
