Sunflower is an album by the US group The Beach Boys . It was released in collaboration between Brother Records and Reprise / Warner Bros.
history
The Beach Boys had founded the record company Brother Records in 1966, but they were contractually bound to Capitol Records until 1969 . It was only with Sunflower that they were able to sign a distribution contract for several records with Reprise Records , a division of Warner Bros. , in order to secure worldwide distribution.
The band began in 1969 with the recordings for the first album, which had the working title Reverberation . Parts of it, along with other newly recorded songs, were finally offered to Warner Bros in early 1970. They then sent the group back to the studio to make revisions. In May 1970 they offered the record company the revised album with partly new material, which was now called Add some music . But this was also rejected by the record company. Finally it was agreed to publish the best songs from the three projects under the title Sunflower . The cover used was the one originally intended for the album Add some music . It shows the Beach Boys with their children.
To bridge the waiting time for the album, the single Add some music / Susie Cincinnati was released in February 1970 , which reached number 64 on the Billboard charts. The second single was Slip On Through / This Whole World in May 1970, but this did not reach the charts. The third single from the album, Tears In The Morning / It's About Time , released in October 1970, was just as unsuccessful as the fourth single Cool, Cool Water / Forever .
Lenny Waronker had Cool, Cool Water is one of the Smile / Wild Honey sessions and Brian persuaded to finish it for Sunflower and publish a single. Very pleased with this song, he said: “ If I ever get the opportunity to produce Brian, I'd encourage him to do something that combined the vividness of 'Good Vibrations' with the non-commercial gentleness of 'Cool, Cool Water' . “It was originally intended for a Coca-Cola commercial .
The album only came to # 151 on the US Billboard charts . It reached # 29 in the UK .
Sunflower was chosen in the 2003 list of the " 500 best albums of all time " published by the American music magazine Rolling Stone .
