Surfin 'Safari is the first album of the Beach Boys . It was released on October 1, 1962. The recordings lasted from April to September 1962. The album was produced by Nick Venet .

Emergence

Murry Wilson, father of Carl , Dennis and Brian Wilson , and the band's first manager, had made an appointment in May 1962 with Nick Venet, a young producer from Capitol Records . He brought a demo tape of Beach Boys songs to the appointment. Murry Wilson played the pieces to Venet, who was delighted. Venet immediately suspected that he had a hit single for Capitol at hand with Surfin 'Safari and 409 . Venet wanted to publish 409 as the A-side, band leader Brian Wilson called for Surfin 'Safari as the A-side. Venet got his way, but a little later it turned out that Brian Wilson was right, and Capitol switched sides. Surfin 'Safari made it to # 14 on the Billboard charts and made the Beach Boys nationwide stars.

Beach Boys founding member Alan Jardine can be heard on the tracks Surfin ' , Surfin' Safari and 409 . The remainder of the album was played by David Lee Marks, a neighbor of the Wilsons who replaced Alan Jardine for two years.

With the exception of the cover versions Little Girl (You're My Miss America) , Summertime Blues and Moon Dawg , all tracks were composed by Brian Wilson. Mike Love wrote the lyrics for three Wilson compositions. Gary Usher , who is named as co-writer on the remaining pieces, was a friend of Brian Wilson's and made a career as a singer, composer and producer in the mid-1960s.

The song Land Ahoy , which was first released on Beach Boys Rarities (1983), was also written during the sessions for the album . Capitol Records added the song to the new edition Surfin 'Safari / Surfin' USA (2001). The song Cherry, Cherry Coupe from the album Little Deuce Coupe is based on the melody of Land Ahoy .

All recordings are in mono .

The album reached number 32 on the US Billboard charts and stayed there for 37 weeks.

Additional information about the songs

Surfin 'Safari was produced by Chuck Britz, who was also involved as a sound engineer on the subsequent recordings of the Beach Boys.

County Fair was written in ten minutes , according to co- songwriter Gary Usher .

Ten Little Indians was released as the second single, but could only reach number 49. B-side became County Fair .

Little Girl (You're My Miss America) was the first song on which Dennis Wilson took over the main vocal part. The song was written by Vincent Catalano and Herb Alpert . The first version is from Dante & His Friends .

409 reached number 76 on the charts as the B-side of Surfin 'Safari . The song is about a Chevrolet Impala 409, Gary Usher's dream car. The engine noise in the song comes from Usher's 348 Chevrolet.

Surfin 'was released as a single on the small record label Candix Records in 1961 and became a top 5 chart success (No. 2) in California. Nationally, the song could only reach number 75. The version released on this album had, however, been re-recorded.

Summertime Blues is a well-known garage rock classic by Eddie Cochran .

Moon Dawg was written by producer Nick Venet under the pseudonym "Derry Weaver". The original was released in 1959 by the first surf band The Gamblers . It is unclear whether Derry Weaver, the group's guitarist, is identical to Nick Venet or whether Venet just used his name.
