Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 is an album on which Beach Boys songs from 1962 to 1968 were re-recorded with country musicians . The album was released in 1996.
The album was produced by Brian Wilson and Joe Thomas . Mike Love acted as executive producer .
The album
In 1995 Melinda Wilson had the idea for a duet between her husband Brian Wilson and Willie Nelson . You should release the Beach Boys song "The Warmth of the Sun" in a country style. Mike Love heard about the planned project and suggested that the Beach Boys sing along with Nelson. Soon the idea was born to create an entire album with more country singers. Brian Wilson and country musician Joe Thomas were selected as producers for this complete work.
12 songs were selected, which were recorded by various country stars in their own style. The Beach Boys were only represented in the background vocals and were more or less guests on their own album. In addition to the 12 songs, a version of "In my room" by Tammy Wynette and Brian Wilson was recorded, but it did not appear on the album. It was saved for a possible follow-up album and finally appeared in 1998 on the album Tammy Wynette Remembered .
The album and some singles released reached places in the US country charts. The singles were Don't Worry Baby (# 73), Long Tall Texan (# 69), and Little Deuce Coupe (# 69). I Can Hear Music reached # 16 on the Adult Contemporary Charts.
The album peaked at # 101 on the US Billboard charts and reached an appealing 16 spot on the country albums chart. However, since it fell far short of the sales figures expected, the planned further albums were soon forgotten.
