All Summer Long is the sixth album of the Beach Boys . It was published on July 1, 1964.

History of origin

All Summer Long is the band's last studio album before Brian Wilson retired from touring and the last before his nervous breakdown .

Like its predecessors, the album is a kind of concept album . While the first albums were mostly about surfing and Little Deuce Coupe from automobiles, All Summer Long deals with the Californian lifestyle in general.

This second Beach Boys LP, published after the emergence of Beatlemania , reached number 4 on the US Billboard charts and, with I Get Around, also contains the song that pushed the Beatles from number 1 on the US singles charts .

The album brought ten new Brian Wilson compositions, as well as a cover version with Hushabye and with Our Favorite Recording Sessions a humorous attempt to portray work in the studio.

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version, it was produced by Brian Wilson.

Additional information about the songs

I Get Around was featured on British television by Mick Jagger . The song then became a top 10 hit in Great Britain. It reached number 7 there.

All Summer Long was selected by George Lucas for his second work, American Graffiti . It's there in the credits. The xylophone intro to this song is by Brian Wilson.

Hushabye is a cover version of the doo-wop group The Mystics.

Little Honda was initially planned as a second single. Brian Wilson soon lost courage, however, as he was no longer convinced of the hit potential of this piece after a review. So the Beach Boys did not release the song as a single, but on the EP Four by The Beach Boys , which contains four tracks (A-side: Little Honda / Wendy . B-side : Don't Back Down / Why Do Fools Fall in Love ). The EP made it to number 65 on the Billboard chart. A little later, Gary Usher released the Hondells, a new version of Little Honda , which reached rank 8, and showed the hit quality of this song. After this success, Little Honda was released as a single by the Beach Boys in Europe and was in the top ten in Scandinavia .

Carl's Big Chance is the last surf instrument to be composed by the Beach Boys. The title stems from the fact that Carl Wilson's guitar was more in the background on earlier instrumentals and is now the focus of the piece.

Wendy reached number 44 on the Billboard charts, but was never released as a single, but on the EP Four by The Beach Boys . The song, along with other compositions, was the focus of the legal dispute that Mike Love led against the rest of the band. Mike Love tried in the 1990s to sue for his contributions to the compositions. In the case of Wendy this succeeded, the song is now officially a Wilson / Love composition.

Girls on the Beach is also the title of the only so-called "Beach Movie" in which the Beach Boys played. It shows mature harmonies.

We'll Run Away was the last piece Gary Usher and Brian Wilson wrote for the Beach Boys. They revived their collaboration in 1986 to work on Brian Wilson's first solo album.

Our Favorite Recording Sessions is like "Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson from the previous album is not a song, but an excerpt from the sessions for the album.
