Shut Down Vol. 2 is the fifth album by the Beach Boys , released on March 2, 1964, and also the fifth album within 18 months. This first LP, published after the advent of Beatlemania, contains seven Brian Wilson compositions and one contribution each by Carl Wilson ( Shut Down, Part II ) and Dennis Wilson ( Denny's Drums ) as well as two cover versions and a radio play-like interlude.

History of origin

The recordings date from January to February 1964.

On this album Alan Jardine celebrated his comeback with the Beach Boys , his "replacement" David Lee Marks left the band and founded the group David & the Marksmen .

The addition to the name “Vol. 2 ”became necessary because the Capitol record company released a sampler called Shut Down in 1963 , using the Beach Boys song of the same name without their consent. The group itself never released an album Shut Down Vol. 1 .

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version, it was produced by Brian Wilson. It reached number 13 on the US Billboard charts and stayed there for 38 weeks.

Additional information about the songs

Fun, Fun, Fun is an answer to the rampant Beatlemania. The Beach Boys felt threatened by the British invasion and tried to do something about it. Mike Love wrote the lyrics to the song, which is about a young woman who takes her father's T-Bird for jaunts until the father takes the vehicle back into custody. The song has a real background and refers to a love affair with Dennis Wilson. The guitar playing was influenced by Chuck Berry and contains the typical surf rock elements of the band. The lead guitar was played by Glen Campbell . The single with the song reached number 5 on the Billboard charts.

Don't Worry Baby was originally written for the Ronettes by Brian Wilson . Their producer, Phil Spector , rejected the song because he thought it was too weak. The DJ Roger Christian supported Brian as a copywriter. He wasn't unhappy about Spector's rejection, as Spector would probably have replaced the original text anyway. As the B-side of the I Get Around single, the song reached number 24 on the singles chart.

In the Parkin 'Lot is another collaboration between Roger Christian and Brian Wilson.

"Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson is not a song but a discussion in the studio between Brian Wilson and Mike Love. The title alludes to the names of the two heavyweight boxers Cassius Clay (who later called himself Muhammad Ali) and Sonny Liston .

The Warmth of the Sun was written on November 23, 1963 under the impression of the assassination of John F. Kennedy . The song was used in the soundtrack for Good Morning, Vietnam . In 1995 Brian Wilson re-recorded the song for his documentary "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times". The song contains a pitch change in the final verse that Brian Wilson used over and over again in later years.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love is a cover version of Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers , the song Louie Louie was originally penned by Richard Berry and is a classic of garage rock .

In Pom Pom Play Girl , Carl Wilson took on the lead vocals for the first time.

Shut Down, Part II is an instrumental piece. It contains a saxophone part by Mike Love.

Denny's Drums was the first percussion instrumental piece to appear on a vocal group's album.
