Live in London is a 1970 Beach Boys album . It is the group's second live album .

History of origin

The recording was made at a concert on December 1, 1968 at the London Palladium , one of the most famous West End theaters in London, and a concert in Finsbury Park on August 12, 1968. The musical head of the group Brian Wilson was not at this concert present. Bruce Johnston took over his role .

The album shows the Beach Boys routinely with their then current singles ( Bluebirds Over the Mountain ), some Pet Sounds pieces ( God Only Knows , Sloop John B ) and an encore in the form of Barbara Ann . In contrast to the live album Beach Boys Concert , this only contains already published pieces and only three cover versions with Bluebirds Over the Mountain (by Ersel Hickey ), Their Hearts Were Full of Spring (by Bobby Troup ) and Barbara Ann (by Fred Fassert ) .

As their songs became more and more demanding and could no longer be reproduced by 5 men on stage, the Beach Boys supported Mike Kowalski, Darryl Dragon and Ed Carter as accompanying musicians. Carter had already been discussed as a replacement for Brian Wilson in 1965.

The album was initially only released in the UK , as the group had lost a lot of popularity in the US in the late 1960s. The Beach Boys have been ousted by the current hippie movement . Capitol Records didn't expect to make a lot of money from the recording. In Europe, the Beach Boys were still among the stars of rock music and so the LP was brought onto the market in May 1970, but Live in London was also unsuccessful in the British charts. The album was first released in Japan in 1971 and a year later in France, Holland and Germany.

In the US, the album was only released in 1976 under the title Beach Boys '69 , coinciding with the group's comeback at the time . Apart from a new cover , it's the same album. This version reached number 75 in the US charts in the fall of 1976.

2001 Live in London was released on CD together with Beach Boys Concert (1964). As bonus tracks , Don't Worry Baby was added as an outtake from the 1964 album and Heroes & Villains in a 1967 version from a live show in Hawaii .
