Wild Honey is an album by the US music group The Beach Boys . The album was released in 1967 by the record label Capitol Records .

The story of the album

In contrast to its predecessors, the album Wild Honey was not produced by Brian Wilson , but by the Beach Boys as a group. Brian Wilson withdrew more and more from the public, but provided the Beach Boys with some newly written or as yet unreleased songs. He also took on some vocal parts during the recording of Wild Honey , but had little to do with the other recordings. Since his musical masterpiece Smile had not been published, he suffered from depression . Although he still had many ideas for new songs, he often only managed to complete the pieces with difficulty. On the album Wild Honey , the Beach Boys played their own instruments for the first time in a long time.

Another difference to the previous Beach Boys albums is the economical production. On this album, the Beach Boys did without the sound effects of the two previous albums and only play with the basic instruments. Thanks to this more down-to-earth recording technique, they only needed a few weeks for the recordings.

Wild Honey is one of the worst-selling Beach Boys albums. It still reached number 24 in the US charts (15 weeks) and number 7 in the British charts.

Additional information about the songs

Wild Honey is an ode to a jar of honey that was on the kitchen table in Brian Wilson's apartment. The song was influenced by soul music . The song was also released as a single . It reached number 31 on the Billboard single charts. In the UK, the top spot was 29th. It is the band's third song to feature a theremin .

I Was Made to Love Her is a cover version , the original is by Stevie Wonder .

Darlin ' is another single from the album. It reached number 34 in the US and number 19 in the UK. The song is based on a composition written by Brian Wilson for Sharon Marie, a former friend of Mike Love. The song was initially called Thinkin 'Bout You Baby and was also released under this title in 1963. The revised version was initially intended for the Brian Wilson-produced group The Redwoods, which were under contract with Brother Records . The recordings, directed by Brian Wilson, were never released. The band later called themselves Three Dog Night .

Here Comes the Night was released in 1979 as a disco version as a single and can be found in a ten-minute version on the album LA (Light Album) .

Let the Wind Blow : This song is another footnote in Beach Boys history. Mike Love was known as a lyricist for many Beach Boys songs up to this point. For this song he is also responsible for part of the composition for the first time.

How She Boogalooed It is the first Beach Boys production that Brian Wilson was not involved in - not including the covers and instrumental tracks. A "Wilson" appears in the credits, but what is meant is Brian's younger brother Carl.

Mama Says is a holdover from the smile sessions. You can hear parts of the song in the original version by Vegetables .
