Beach Boys' Party! is an album by the US band The Beach Boys .

Emergence

In 1965, Brian Wilson announced to the world that he no longer wanted to write songs about "little girls on the beach". He had decided to mature musically. At the age of 23, he announced to the world that he would "make the greatest rock album in history". The record company Capitol Records was skeptical and wanted a new Beach Boys album for the Christmas season. Despite the band's large volume of releases - ten albums in three years, two as early as 1965 - Capitol insisted on a new LP. Brian Wilson needed some more time for Pet Sounds , this time he wanted to take things slower. The band had already recorded live and Christmas albums, but they shied away from a best-of album, because at that time best-of albums were only released when an artist was on the way down.

To get around this dilemma, the band resorted to a trick. Instead of an ordinary live album, Beach Boys' party should! give the impression that it was recorded during a party. The Beach Boys went to the studio for a few days and played covers of popular hits from the 1950s and 1960s. The voices and the party noises were only added later. These are the voices of numerous relatives, friends and the wives or girlfriends of the Beach Boys.

The album was recorded with acoustic guitars , electric bass and bongos . It reached number 6 on the US Billboard charts and number 3 on the UK charts.

Additional information about the songs

With I Should Have Known Better , Tell Me Why and You've Got to Hide Your Love Away there are three Beatles songs on the album.

Papa Oom Mow Mow is the only song that was already on a Beach Boys album. Another version can be found on the live album Beach Boys Concert .

The best-known version of Mountain of Love is by Johnny Rivers and reached number 6 in the charts in 1964, the original version by Harald Dorman reached number 21 in 1960. On this version, Billy Hinsche plays the harmonica .

Devoted to You was recorded by the Everly Brothers . Alley Oop is known in versions of three groups and reached high chart positions each: The Dyna Sores (1959), Dante & The Evergreens and Hollywood Argyles .

The medley of I Get Around and Little Deuce Coupe is the only contribution to the album that originally came from the Beach Boys.

Barbara Ann was released as a single by the record company without the band's knowledge and became a huge hit around the world (No. 3 in the UK and No. 2 in the US). Brian Wilson and Dean Torrence took over the lead vocals on this piece. Torrence was a member of the 1960s surf music duo Jan & Dean , for which Brian Wilson composed many hits (including the No. 1 hit Surf City , which Brian Wilson sang along with).
