Surfing Song Book

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Surfing Song Book is a music album by the American band The Rincon Surfside Band .

The LP , released in 1965 , is of particular importance for the history of pop music as it was the first karaoke album. The LP contains 12 surf songs, most of which were known from successful recordings by the Beach Boys and the then very popular duo Jan and Dean . These songs were re-recorded for The Surfing Song Book , with the vocal parts omitted, so that the tracks consisted only of instrumental parts and background vocals . The lyrics were printed on the back of the LP sleeve so that you could play the record and do the vocal parts yourself.

Although The Surfing Song Book was released as an LP by The Rincon Surfside Band , the band didn't really exist. The album was a production by surf composers Phil Sloan and Steve Barri , who hired professional studio musicians for this project , most of whom had already worked on the original recordings of the various songs and who therefore knew their parts by heart. The musicians involved were Hal Blaine (drums), Al DeLory (organ), Joe Osborn (bass), Bill Pittman (bass) and Tommy Tedesco (guitar) as well as Steve Barri (percussion) and Phil Sloan (guitar) themselves. The recording session for The Surfing Song Book took place on May 21, 1965 at the Western Recorders Studio in Hollywood . The completed album was released in July 1965 by Dunhill Records as the label's first record at all.
