Imagination is a solo album by the American musician and songwriter Brian Wilson . Brian Wilson was a founding member and creative head of the Beach Boys , from which he left in 1988.

The album Imagination appeared in 1998 on the music label "Giant Records". It was produced by Brian Wilson and Joe Thomas .

History of origin

In 1995 the Beach Boys had returned to the studio with Brian Wilson to re-record their old hits with some country greats under the title Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 . During these recordings, Wilson met Joe Thomas. Thomas was a former wrestler trying to get a foothold in the music business. Thomas made the proposal to work out and produce a new solo album together with Wilson . Brian Wilson was not very enthusiastic about this suggestion. With friend and multi-instrumentalist Andy Paley, he had a perfect partner at his side and wanted to continue working on the numerous songs he had written with Paley. But it was precisely these songs that his wife and manager Melinda Wilson found too immature. She was in favor of a collaboration with Thomas and signed a contract with him that engaged Brian Wilson to produce two albums with Joe Thomas. The collaboration began with a few casual get-togethers where the two of them played some old songs together. Only after a few months did they begin to compose together.

Brian and Melinda Wilson left Los Angeles . They moved to St. Charles ( Illinois ) and a house is bought near Thomas to allow the two musicians to work at any time. Wilson had worked alone very often in the past. If he had a partner, the roles were clearly assigned - Wilson wrote the music and the partners (like Mike Love , Tony Asher , Van Dyke Parks ) wrote the lyrics.

In addition to Thomas, Wilson wrote this album with several other songwriters. In addition to the newly composed pieces, new recordings of some older songs are included. How to find She Says That She Needs Me . The song, originally called Sherry She Needs Me , was written by Wilson for Glen Campbell in 1965 . But he decided on Guess I Am Dump . In the mid-1970s, Wilson rewrote the song for a new Beach Boys album, which did not come out. In the 1980s he reworked the song with Russ Titelman for his first solo album, but again there was no publication. It wasn't until 1998, when Carole Bayer Sager wrote a new text, that the song was put on the album. There are also two new recordings of Beach Boys songs added to the album - Keep an Eye on Summer and Let Him Run Wild . With Where Has Love Been? also includes a song from the Wilson-Paley Sessions.

The piece Lay Down Burden is about the loss of his brother Carl Wilson died and his mother, Audree, both of the 1998th

Jimmy Buffett can be heard as a guest on Sunshine .

successes

The single Your Imagination was played by various radio stations for some time, but does not make it into the charts.

Despite being Wilson's best-selling solo project, the album again failed to meet Wilson's expectations of commercial success. The album reached # 88 on the US Billboard charts and # 30 on the UK charts.

concert

In 1998 Joe Thomas and Melinda Wilson tried to persuade Brian Wilson to present the album "live". Brian Wilson had been terrified of gigs throughout his career. He had several nervous breakdowns in the 1960s . At first he did not want to perform, but was finally persuaded. Wilson had no band for this - as he himself said - one-off performance. Alongside himself, Joe Thomas and Andy Paley, he called some old friends and asked them to help them. Among them were z. B. Billy Hinsch (brother-in-law of Carl Wilson, member of the Beach Boys Session / and touring band). Then there was a friend of Carl Wilson's - Christopher Cross . Beach boy Bruce Johnston also agreed to do the concert with Brian Wilson.
