Marcus Cornelius Cethegus (Consul 204 BC)

Marcus Cornelius Cethegus († 196 BC ) was a Roman consul . He was a highly respected speaker and was praised by Ennius for his suadae medulla . In the second Punic War he won a battle against Mago , Hannibal's brother .

Cethegus was born in 213 BC. Chr. Pontifex maximus and curular aedile . 211 BC He became praetor and proved to be a successful administrator in Apulia and Sicily . 209 BC He became a censor and 204 BC Chr. Consul. 203 BC He was proconsul in northern Italy. There he defeated together with the Praetor Publius Quintilius Varus in the territory of the Insubrians a battle against Mago and forced them to leave Italy. He died in 196 BC Chr.
