Lucius Gellius Publicola (Consul 36 BC)
Lucius Gellius Publicola (also: Poplicola ) was a Roman politician of the 1st century BC. Chr.
The adopted son of the consul of the same name from 72 BC. Chr. And half-brother of Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus belonged as a young man to the followers of Publius Clodius Pulcher and is sharply attacked in several poems by Catullus . He is said to have committed adultery with his stepmother, his father's second wife.
After Gaius Julius Caesar's assassination , Gellius went east with the conspirators, but was embroiled in conspiracies against Brutus and Cassius . The intercession of his half-brother and mother, Polla, saved him from execution. He ran over to Mark Antony and is about 41 BC. Attested by coins as quaestor . 36 BC He became consul.
When the civil war broke out, Gellius rejoined Mark Antony and commanded the right wing of his fleet in the battle of Actium . His fate thereafter is not documented; presumably he perished in the battle or shortly afterwards.
Gellius Publicola was married to a Sempronia .
