Sabinillus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabinillus was a Roman politician and senator at the time of the imperial crisis of the 3rd century .

In 266 he was full consul with Emperor Gallienus . Porphyrios also counts a senator of this name in his Vita Plotini among the students of the Neo-Platonist Plotinus , who lived and taught in Rome until 270. He was one of its most philosophically gifted followers.

If the consul and the philosopher are the same person, a connection could be established between the careers of Sabinillus and Plotinus. His affiliation with the school of Plotinus then possibly helped Sabinillus to become consulate with Gallienus. The philosopher and his followers enjoyed a high reputation among the emperor. Conversely, however, it was also suspected that Sabinillus had become consul for other reasons and that Plotinus only gained popularity at court over the next few years.
