Luc Brisson

Luc Brisson (born March 10, 1946 in Saint-Esprit , Comté de Montcalm , Québec , Canada ) is a Canadian and since 1986 naturalized French historian of philosophy and anthropologist of antiquity . Life

After completing the Études primaires in Saint-Esprit, Brisson took the Cours classique (Éléments latins à Rhétorique) from 1957 to 1963 at the Saint-Sacrement seminar in Terrebonne and from 1963 to 1965 the Cours classique (philosophy I and II) at the Sainte- Thérèse of Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville . At the instigation of Paul Ricœur , who taught regularly in Montreal, he went to the University of Paris X Nanterre to study with Clémence Ramnoux , where he prepared a thèse de doctorat de 3e cycle from 1968 to 1971. At the same time he studied the sociology of ancient Greece with Pierre Vidal-Naquet at the École pratique des hautes études . From 1979 to 1984 he studied Sanskrit at the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III . In 1981 he became chargé de recherche at the CNRS. In June 1982 he obtained a degree in living foreign languages ​​in Indology . In June 1984 he acquired the Maîtrise en Études Indiennes from Marie-Claude Porcher with a dissertation entitled La figure du roi dans le Dasakumaracarita de Dandin.

In December 1985, the Doctorat d'État in philosophy at the Université de Paris X-Nanterre followed with a dissertation under the title: Mythe et philosophie chez Plato. The jury consisted of Clémence Ramnoux (Chair) and Pierre Aubenque , Jacques Brunschwig (Rapporteur), Jean Pépin and Pierre Vidal-Naquet. In 1986 he became Directeur de Recherche (2ème classe), in 1998 Directeur de Recherche (1ère classe) at the Center national de la recherche scientifique.

Brisson is a member of the International Plato Society and the Academia Platonica Septima Monasteriensis .

Brisson works primarily on Plato and Neoplatonism , especially Plotinus , in the form of research reports and bibliographies, translations and commentaries. In the field of anthropology of antiquity, he has mainly published structurally oriented works on the seer Tiresias , on orphics and hermaphroditism, as well as on myth as such.
