John M. Dillon

John Myles Dillon (born September 15, 1939 ) is an Irish classical philologist and philosopher . Dillon was 1980-2006 Regius Professor of Greek at Trinity College in Dublin . He previously taught at the University of California, Berkeley . Dillon has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens since 2010 . His areas of research are the history of Platonism (from the Platonic Academy to the Renaissance ) and early Christianity . In 1983 he was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy .

He is the son of Myles Dillon .

Among the best-known scientific works of Dillon are his translation of Iamblichus On the Mysteries (the Egyptians), his book on Middle Platonism and other works and translations on Neoplatonism (in addition to Iamblichus, for example, Alkinos Didaskalikos and Plotinus Enneades ). Dillon's essays have been published in two anthologies, The Golden Chain (1990) and The Great Tradition (1997).

His first novel, The Scent of Eucalyptus ( The smell of eucalyptus ), was released of 2007.
