Pierre Aubenque

Pierre Aubenque (born July 23, 1929 in L'Isle-Jourdain , Département Gers ; † February 23, 2020 in Versailles ) was a French historian of philosophy , who was particularly known as an expert on the exegesis of Aristotle . In his interpretations of ancient classics, he has often dealt with the thinking of Martin Heidegger .

Aubenque attended the école normal supérieure in Paris (1947-1950), taught from 1955 to 1960 at the University of Montpellier and from 1960 to 1964 in Besançon , from 1964 to 1966 at the University of Aix-Marseille , then from 1966 to 1969 at the university Hamburg . From 1969 he was professor for the history of ancient philosophy at the Sorbonne ( University of Paris IV ). He also worked occasionally at the European Graduate School (EGS), which is not recognized as a university, at summer academies.

Aubenque is known, among other things, for the proof that the concept of analogy used by Thomas Aquinas is a reconstruction that is not found in Aristotle. In 1972 he published the well-known conversation between Heidegger and Ernst Cassirer in Davos ( Davos Disputation ) in French translation.
