Mirko D. Grmek

Mirko Dražen Grmek (born January 9, 1924 in Krapina , Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ; † March 6, 2000 in Paris ) was a Croatian - French medical historian and writer.

Grmek is considered one of the pioneers and founders of medical history. All of his work is geared towards historical research into medical knowledge and medical practice using current scientific methods, especially the history of ideas . He introduced the term pathocenosis , which describes the totality of diseases that occur at a certain time in a certain place and in a certain society. Danielle Gourevitch was a close associate .

In 1991 Grmek was awarded the George Sarton Medal . In 1994 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
